Descemet's stripping with endothelial keratoplasty
DSEK
What is DSEK ?
- The diseased posterior or the back portion of eye is selectively replaced with the healthier one.
- Back portion of eye may get damaged due to certain diseases like Fuchs endothelial dystrophy , Age related decline in endothelial cells, after cataract surgery, trauma etc
- If the back portion of eye is diseased, the cornea loses its transparency leading to foggy vision
What are the advantages of DSEK over conventional full thickness corneal transplant ?
-Reduced surgical time
-Faster visual recovery
- The suture related complications with conventional surgery can be avoided so there are lesser chances of infection
- As the major portion of patients own cornea is retained the structural integrity of the eye is preserved. The eye is more resistant to trauma
